Importance of hydration
Staying optimally hydrated is crucial for you and your body. Your body is about 60% water, and this water is used to regulate body temperature, deliver nutrients to cells, eliminates waste via the kidneys, keeps joints lubricated, keeps digestive systems working, skin healthy and helps to prevent infections.
Being well hydrated also helps improve sleep quality, optimizes energy and muscle strength and mental function.
*** IV hydration during Pregnancy, Hyperemesis Gravidarum, & Breast feeding can be hugely beneficial to both mum and baby/babies.
IV by the SEA is blessed to be able to support with weekly, fortnightly or as needed hydration infusions. For possible immediate IV hydration service please contact by email.
Adding a Vitamin B multi dose to your IV hydration is a great way to also help with possible fatigue & lethargy.
If you are dehydrated you may feel tired, lethargic, unable to complete simple tasks, or unable to participate in everyday activities. Studies show that even mild dehydration can impair brain function, mood and concentration.
You can lose water through sweat, urine and vomiting, and also when pregnant or when breastfeeding. So, during hot weather, sporting activities, high temperatures or during sickness more water is lost and therefore dehydration is more likely to occur.
Other causes of dehydration are Gastro, vomiting/ diarrhoea, jet lag, chronic disease, increased exercise, intensity training or extreme sport’s, pregnancy, morning sickness, breastfeeding, simply not drinking enough water, alcohol binge, urinary tract infections (UTI’s), inflammatory bowel disease, infected with parasites, viral infections, chronic fatigue; there are many, many reasons why someone may be dehydrated.
Dehydration may be diagnosed with a pathology/ Blood test which is ordered by your doctor, or it may be noticeable with a low BP (Blood Pressure), feeling lightheaded, lethargy, fainting episode, high temperatures, headaches or with general fatigue symptoms.
Treatments for poor hydration level or dehydration
By the time we feel thirsty the body is already dehydrated and drinking to eliminate thirst often will not hydrate the body. It is ideal to get into the habit of drinking water often. The best way to see if you are hydrated is to look at your urine colour. Darker coloured urine often means the body needs more water, pale straw coloured urine is a good indicator of good hydration.
The easiest way to replace fluids is by mouth (water or hydrating electrolyte oral fluids). This is usually all that is required. Adults need to drink about 1.5 – 2 litres of fluid each day.
However, for some people an infusion of hydration therapy (with or without electrolytes) is essential for optimal hydration levels and can have you feeling much better, much quicker.
Intravenous (IV) Hydration Therapy
A hydration infusion is usually ordered by your doctor.
A blood pathology test is recommended before any intravenous therapy to monitor for any renal or liver disease, or any other possible anomalies in your blood.
A routine yearly blood test is an exceptional way to ensure you and your body are working well.
Intravenous fluids (usually between 500 ml’s or 1000 ml’s) of fluid or fluid and electrolytes is given as an infusion (drip) directly into the venous blood circulation of the body using a cannula (needle) into your vein.
Possible additives to Hydration Therapy
Medication therapies, (e.g. IVF treatment), vitamins, minerals, or other additives may be recommended by your doctor for the treatment of many medical conditions and vitamin deficiencies. Please advise if these are required.
A script or IV therapy plan will be required for these supplementary additions.
I am also trained, skilled and able to access your PORT or PICC access sites with permission from your medical team.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS (S/E's) of Hydration Infusion
It is rare to have a side effect to hydration therapy. If S/E’s occur, they are usually temporary, mild and settle down quickly without treatment or intervention.
Side effects may be immediate, apparent during the infusion, occur while waiting post the infusion or may very rarely become evident over the next day or two.
The most common Side Effects (S/E’s)are:
- Rash
- Anxiety related to cannulation / needle
- Inflammation of the vein or bruising at the cannulation site
- Unable to cannulate (not able to find a vein).
** Please advise if previous difficulties with blood taking or IV's or if prone to fainting or phobia of needles, IV's, blood pathology issues in the past.
- Infection at the injection / cannulation site
On the day of your hydration therapy
It is recommended (if possible) that you eat and drink normally prior to your infusion.
Fasting is not required and can cause difficulties with cannulation of your vein, dehydration makes finding a good vein more difficult.
Wear comfortable clothes, with easy access to arms and elbows.
Bring something to occupy you time.
It will possibly take up to an hour (although usually less time than this) and you will then need to wait from 10 minutes and up to 30 minutes to ensure any possible S/E’s are detected and treated (if required).
You will be able to drive home and resume normal activities, however it is strongly suggested that you plan to take it easy for the remainder of the day.
After your hydration therapy
There are minimal limitations after your infusion.
The IVT arm (where the cannula was) can potentially bruise or bleed. Rest this arm, avoid strenuous exercise or lifting for the next few hours if possible.
As stated above, if possible it is advised to rest to optimise your hydration therapy.
